Everything About Dental Sedation

Sedation dentistry involves the use of pharmacological agents to induce a state of relaxation or sleep. Sedation can help patients stay relaxed during dental treatment, particularly the nervous or those with dental phobia. Some patients undergo sedation during dental procedures such as root canals, dental implants, or oral surgery.

Types of Dental Sedation

There are three main types of dental sedation - inhaled sedation, oral sedation, and IV sedation.

  • Oral sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a pill about an hour before the procedure. Oral sedation is safe and highly effective and is a great option if you're nervous about a procedure. Oral sedation is also a good option for patients who have a hard time sitting still or who need multiple treatments at once.

  • Laughing gas (nitrous oxide/oxygen) sedation

Laughing gas is inhaled through a face mask or nasal prongs. This form of sedation typically takes effect quickly and wears off quickly as well. Patients remain awake during their procedure but are often so relaxed that they fall asleep. Patients may feel like they are light-headed, giddy, or euphoric during the procedure.

  • IV sedation

IV sedation is one of the deepest levels of sedation. A small needle will be inserted into your arm or hand. The needle is attached to a small tube that administers a sedative. Patients under IV sedation are unconscious and will not be able to respond to commands. The sedative will keep them asleep throughout their entire procedure. Patients will wake up groggy.

Who Can Benefit From Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is for people that do not feel comfortable undergoing dental treatments while awake. This could be due to dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, fear of needles, or a very strong gag reflex. They also benefit patients who find it difficult to get numb or those who can't sit in the dental chair for a long time.

Is Dental Sedation Safe?

Sedation dentistry can help alleviate the fear and anxiety many people feel before and during a dental visit. They are safe when administered by an experienced dental professional, as you will be under their direct monitoring throughout the procedure.

Is Sedation Dentistry Right For Me?

If you experience dental anxiety or dental phobia, you may benefit from sedation dentistry. Dental anxiety or dental phobia can cause some patients to feel fearful or uncomfortable about undergoing dental treatment. If you're one of these patients, you may benefit from sedation dentistry.

Sedation dentistry helps patients feel more relaxed while receiving treatment. In addition to helping patients feel more relaxed, sedation dentistry can also help reduce pain.
