Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is a technique in which the dentist administers sedatives to the patient to help them relax before or during a lengthy dental procedure. The technique is simple and, most often, does not involve the use of needles.

The medication used in sedation dentistry ensures patients are relaxed and calm while also keeping them conscious, awake, and able to cooperate with the dentist. In many cases, patients have no recollection of their visit once the procedure is completed.

Sedation Dentistry Options

Minimal Sedation

The patient remains awake but is numb to pain and completely relaxed.

Moderate Sedation

The patient is slightly drowsy but awake and has little memory of the procedure once it is completed.

Deep Sedation

The patient is asleep but can easily be awakened. The patient is entirely unconscious only when placed under general anesthesia.

Who Is Sedation Dentistry For?

Sedation dentistry is used for patients with high levels of dental anxiety and fear of dental procedures. Usually, sensitive patients who cannot tolerate pain also choose sedation dentistry.

Sedation dentistry is also suitable for patients with a sensitive gag reflex, for young children, or for individuals with physical or mental disabilities.

Major Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

One of the major benefits of sedation dentistry is that it helps patients think the dental procedure only took only a few minutes when, in fact, it may have taken hours to complete.

As a result, major dental procedures such as smile makeovers or substantial restorations can frequently be completed in fewer appointments.

Sedation Dentistry Procedure

The techniques used in sedation dentistry vary in intensity and entail various inhalation, oral, or intravenous methods. Your dentist will determine the most appropriate dose of sedation for you based on the procedures being performed, the duration of these procedures, and your level of anxiety.

Although your dentist will ultimately decide which sedatives to use, you can request stronger sedatives if you have severe dental anxiety.
